The first KFMA grading for 2025 was held on 3rd April.  This was a challenging grading as we had a disruption to our training due to the weather event in March. We had to delay the grading to allow students more time to train and prepare.

Leading up to the grading, we focused on the importance of etiquette and basic techniques. We had 9 students approved to grade, some of which were higher ranks that were required to demonstrate advanced techniques and terminology. Overall, I saw students have worked hard in the lead up to the grading and the standard of basics, etiquette and terminology was high.

With our first grading now behind us, we have just 4 weeks to prepare for our first competition as Team KFMA. We have students competing in poomsae, sparring and speed kicking events at the Gold Coast Open.

I encourage all students to practice at home and work on the basic skills we learn in class- this is the foundation of everything we do and helps to consolidate your learning and improves your skills.

Well done everyone!

Master Mark

Gold Coast Open 2025

KFMA had 5 gold medals from 5 players bringing home 100% Gold!

On the 4th May 2025, KFMA headed to the Cararra Indoor Stadium for the Annual Gold Coast Open. This is the first time KFMA have competed as a team, and we had 5 players enter- 2 in sparring and 5 in poomsae events. We trained hard for this over the last couple of months including extra Saturday training.

Alexanda sparred in 2 rounds, and he did well for his age given he fought an experienced 8-year-old. Alexanda lost by losing his second round by a big margin.

Zara sparred 2 rounds against a higher rank with a close first round. In the second round she hurt her arm, but continued to push on, bringing home the silver.

5 players entered individual poomsae events and the scores were very high- showing they have practiced at home and taken on my feedback during class, putting this into action.

Players results are:

Brooke 6.13 Gold

Alexanda 6.00 Gold

Zara 5.89 Gold

Sam 5.40 Gold

Dani 4.98 Gold

This is the first Gold Coast Open for most students and this environment can be overwhelming, but all students focused and represented KFMA to the best of their abilities. As with everything, competing brings opportunities for learning and personal growth- this is life and martial arts! We will be focusing on these in class over the coming weeks.

This was Sam's first competition, and he had to learn two new patterns simultaneously to compete- this was a huge achievement.

Zara challenged herself by entering sparring and poomsae events and performed better than her previous tournament.

As KFMA's youngest competitor and his first taekwondo competition, Alexanda didn't crumble under the pressure and performed his poomsae exceptionally well.

Brooke, the senior of the KFMA team, achieved her highest competition score to date.

Dani was on her way to score the highest of the team but had a slip up at the end and still managed to bring home a gold medal.

I saw all of my students display exceptional etiquette today, not only during their time on the mats, but in general, and this is great to see. Good etiquette is what sets KFMA apart so well done everyone!

As KFMA's Master Instructor, it was great to see you all wearing your uniforms with pride. Thank you to all my students who put themselves out of their comfort zones today- this means a lot to me personally. You all did so well, and I am proud of each and every one of you.

Master Mark

Caboolture Open 2025

On the 22nd June 2025, Team KFMA headed to the Caboolture Open at Morayfield. This year marked the 20 year anniversary of this event and expectations were high.

We had 5 players enter individual poomsae events with only 2 weeks preparation due to my trip to Korea. The team consisted of students who had competed before and one new competitor. Scoring was tougher than the Gold Coast Open, but the team still brought home Gold Medals for each event.

Players results are:

Brooke -  Gold

Elizabeth - Gold

Dani - Gold

Aria - Gold

Alexanda - Gold

It was pleasing to see the level of skill and etiquette my students displayed at this event. As with the Gold Coast Open, you all stood out- in the best way possible. Thank you, Team KFMA, for the extra effort and making me proud.

Next year we are taking a bigger team to the Gold Coast Open and Caboolture Open, so watch this space!
